The Origin Story
In 2024, Nick Vossburg got a solar quote for his North Carolina home: $47,369 for a 19kW system. The price felt wrong. After weeks of research — reading Reddit threads, calling suppliers, and learning the industry — he discovered the truth: the equipment in that quote cost roughly $12,000 at wholesale. The rest was markup, sales commissions, and overhead.
So he built the system himself. He sourced panels from Signature Solar, an EG4 18kPV hybrid inverter, and EG4 LL batteries. He hired a licensed electrician for the electrical work, permitting, and inspection. Total cost: $22,835. That's 52% less — a savings of $24,534.
The system has been running flawlessly. Same equipment. Same power output. Same warranties. Just without the $25,000 markup.
